Walnut and maple
The board comes first.
Sixty-four squares cut from a single board of each wood, so the grain runs unbroken from rank to rank.
Blown glass
Pieces you can see through.
Each piece is gathered from the furnace and shaped by eye. No two kings are quite the same height.
Lead-free crystal, annealed for 14 hours.
Weighted and felted
Set down without a sound.
Brass weights under green baize: every piece sits square and stays there, even in a blitz.
Made slowly, played for generations.
